What is in the bundle

  1. The Index of Forbidden Books: The First Papal Index
The Index of Forbidden Books: The First Papal Index

Erasmus. Machiavelli. Boccaccio's Decameron. Dante's Monarchy. The whole of Luther, Calvin and Zwingli. Every book of magic and divination, the Talmud, dozens of Bibles, and 61 printers whose entire output was banned, even books they had not yet printed. This is the Index of 1559, the first papal list of forbidden books, here complete in modern English.

  2. Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Ptolemaic and Copernican
Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Ptolemaic and Copernican

The book that brought Galileo before the Inquisition. In 1632 Galileo Galilei published a lively, witty conversation in which three friends spend four days arguing whether the earth stands still at the centre of the world or spins on its axis and travels around the sun. A year later he was tried in Rome, forced to renounce the motion of the earth, and the book was banned. Here it is complete in modern English.

  3. On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres
On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres

The book that turned the world inside out. In 1543 Nicolaus Copernicus, a canon of Frauenburg on the Baltic coast, published in Nuremberg six books claiming that the sun stands at the center of the world and that the earth is a planet: it turns on its axis and travels around the sun once a year. The printers added an unsigned preface telling readers it was all just a convenient hypothesis. Seventy years later the book was placed on the Index of Forbidden Books "until corrected". Here it is complete in modern English.
