About this book
This is the first of five notebooks that give his whole book in English. It opens with what the ancient world believed about the soul returning — Egyptians, Chaldeans, Indians, Gauls, Plato, Pythagoras, the Hebrews and the Gospels — and with the reasonings of nineteenth-century thinkers from Victor Hugo and Tolstoy to Sir Oliver Lodge. Then de Rochas describes the stages of "magnetic sleep" as he observed them, the diary in which his student subject Laurent recorded his own sensations in 1893, and the sessions with Joséphine, an eighteen-year-old servant who, led back step by step, passed her birth and began to speak as a man who had lived before.
