Back Through the Lives
Can a person under hypnosis be led back through childhood, past birth, into lives lived long ago? In the years around 1900 Colonel Albert de Rochas — engineer officer, administrator of the École Polytechnique in Paris and one of the most careful researchers of hypnosis of his time — set out to test it. He put his subjects to sleep, led them back year by year and wrote down every word. In 1911 he published the results: "Les vies successives" — Successive Lives.

Eugénie, a widow from Grenoble, returns to her childhood and, pushed forward, seems to foresee her own future. Mme Lambert sees herself old but will not look at her death. Louise remembers being a country priest. Mlle Mayo, eighteen, is the longest and most carefully recorded story in the book: thirty sessions witnessed by a doctor, an engineer and an officer, and three "previous lives" — a Breton fisherman's wife, a young man called Charles Mauville and the court lady Madeleine de Saint-Marc.
