Eleven Lives
Can a person under hypnosis be led back through childhood, past birth, into lives lived long ago? In the years around 1900 Colonel Albert de Rochas — engineer officer, administrator of the École Polytechnique in Paris and one of the most careful researchers of hypnosis of his time — set out to test it. He put his subjects to sleep, led them back year by year and wrote down every word. In 1911 he published the results: "Les vies successives" — Successive Lives.

About this book
This is the third of five notebooks that give his whole book in English. Here are cases 8 to 19. Most of the notebook belongs to Mme J., a young woman whom the Lyon magnetizer M. Bouvier "took back" through eleven lives, from Briançon in 1860 to the age of Attila and beyond. Then the young soldier Surel, who sees himself at Waterloo; the somnambulist Victoria; the young model Juliette, sent not only into the past but into the future; Marguerite; and Henriette, who "becomes" the Bishop of Marseille, Belzunce, and signs his name. Here de Rochas's honesty shows best: he writes to mayors and priests, searches the archives and records openly that most of the checkable details are not confirmed.
