Ancient Magic
In the America of the 1890s "magnetism" was a word everybody knew. A century earlier Franz Anton Mesmer had taught that an invisible fluid passes from one living body to another and can heal; by the 1890s mesmerists, hypnotists, spiritualist mediums and mail-order courses in "personal magnetism" all promised their readers a hidden power. In 1895 "The National Institute", at the Masonic Temple in Chicago, published Prof. L. H. Anderson's "Ancient Magic, Magnetism and Psychic Forces: The Key to Power". Its bold claim: what the ancients called magic, miracle or oracle was in truth magnetism — a natural power of the human mind and body.

About this book
This is the first notebook of the series "Ancient Magic and Magnetism". It contains the author's Introduction and his first four chapters: the phenomena of magnetism and Mesmer's "animal magnetism" — an invisible force passed on by the hand, the eye and the word; black and white magic as the Kabbalah describes it, and the three classes of forbidden magic; dreams, visions, the seer and the poet, and the healings of the Bible; and the secrets of the Egyptian priests, their life of purity and the "temple sleep". An honest note on the sources: as our foreword shows, many paragraphs of these historical chapters follow, almost word for word and without acknowledgement, William Howitt's 1854 English translation of Joseph Ennemoser's "The History of Magic" — a common practice in popular books of the time. The text is given complete, as Anderson printed it; only obvious printer's errors of the 1895 edition are corrected.
