Hypnotism and Spiritualism
In the 1890s hypnotism was entering medicine — doctors in Paris and Nancy argued about what it really was — while spiritualist séances, with rapping tables and mediums, had spread across America since 1848 and had their own weekly newspapers. Prof. L. H. Anderson's "Ancient Magic, Magnetism and Psychic Forces: The Key to Power" (Chicago, 1895) joins these worlds in one picture: for Anderson the hypnotist's trance, the mystic's ecstasy and the medium's séance are a single force seen at different levels.

About this book
This is the second notebook of the series "Ancient Magic and Magnetism". It contains Chapters V–VII, complete. Chapter V presents hypnotism as a universal "law of attraction" — from Jacob's flocks and prenatal influences to thought waves in a "psychic-ether" and the dream of an ideal society. Chapter VI links mesmerism with the mystics' seven stages of the soul's ascent to God and surveys the uses of hypnotism in its day: painless operations in trance, cures by passes, Faith-Healing and Christian Science, rigid limbs, suggested sights, clairvoyance and psychometry — and warns against abuse. Chapter VII calls spiritualism "the Necromancy of the nineteenth century": the six conditions of a séance, the medium as a bridge between two worlds, paid mediums who turn to trickery, and how to detect fraud. The text is given complete, as Anderson printed it; only obvious printer's errors of the 1895 edition are corrected.
