The First WorldGenesis tells the story of the fallen angels in a few lines: "God's sons saw that men's daughters were beautiful", and the Nephilim were on the earth in those days. The Book of Enoch tells the whole story — and it has come down to us complete only in Ge'ez, in the Bible of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Christianity reached the kingdom of Aksum in the 4th century, under King Ezana, and ever since the Ethiopian church has kept its Scriptures in Ge'ez. Its canon of about 81 books is wider than that of any other church, and it holds two books that other churches set aside and gradually lost: the Book of Enoch and the Book of Jubilees.

The Parables of EnochThe Book of Enoch is not one work but a collection of five, and it has survived complete only in Ge'ez, in the Bible of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, whose canon is wider than that of any other church. Its second part, the Parables — or Similitudes — of Enoch, holds a figure found nowhere else in the book: the Elect One, the Righteous One, the Son of Man, hidden before the world was made, who sits on the throne of glory and judges the kings and the mighty of the earth. For many readers these are the most important chapters of the whole book, because their language is so close to that of the Gospels.

The Lights of Heaven and the Dream VisionsThe Book of Enoch, lost almost everywhere else, has survived complete only in Ethiopia: the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has read its Scriptures for centuries in Ge'ez, and its canon is wider than that of any other church. This notebook brings together two very different parts of the book. The first looks up at the sky: the angel Uriel shows Enoch how the sun and the moon pass through the portals of heaven, how the year is counted — exactly 364 days — where the winds come from and what is written on the heavenly tablets. The second looks at history: Enoch tells his son Methuselah two dreams, the earth destroyed by the Flood and the whole history of Israel, in which people and nations appear as animals.

The Epistle of EnochThe Book of Enoch has survived complete only in Ge'ez, in the Bible of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, whose canon is wider than that of any other church. It is a collection of five books, and the fifth, the Epistle of Enoch, closes the whole. It is the most personal part: Enoch no longer travels through heaven but speaks to his children as an old father before his death — about justice, riches, suffering and death. He sums up the history of the world in ten "weeks", pronounces woes on those who oppress the weak, and promises the righteous who died in sorrow that they will shine like the lights of heaven.

The Secrets of EnochGenesis gives Enoch only a few verses: he "walked with God, and he was not, for God took him". The Book of the Secrets of Enoch tells the whole journey. In his 365th year, resting on his bed, Enoch sees two enormous men with faces shining like the sun, and they carry him up through the heavens — past the fallen angels hanging in darkness, paradise with the tree of life, the sun with its singing Phoenixes and Chalkydri, the silent Grigori — to the tenth heaven, where he sees the face of the Lord. There God himself reveals to him how the world was made, and Enoch writes 366 books.
