The Lights of Heaven and the Dream Visions
The Book of Enoch, lost almost everywhere else, has survived complete only in Ethiopia: the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has read its Scriptures for centuries in Ge'ez, and its canon is wider than that of any other church. This notebook brings together two very different parts of the book. The first looks up at the sky: the angel Uriel shows Enoch how the sun and the moon pass through the portals of heaven, how the year is counted — exactly 364 days — where the winds come from and what is written on the heavenly tablets. The second looks at history: Enoch tells his son Methuselah two dreams, the earth destroyed by the Flood and the whole history of Israel, in which people and nations appear as animals.

About this book
This is the third notebook of the series "The Ethiopian Bible". It contains 1 Enoch 72–90: the course of the sun through six portals and a day divided into eighteen parts; the moon, growing and waning by fourteenths of her light; the stars, the four added days and the twelve winds, four of blessing and eight of harm; the heavenly tablets that hold all the deeds of mankind. Then the Dream Visions: the young Enoch dreaming in the house of his grandfather Mahalalel that the heaven falls onto the earth, and the long Animal Vision — Adam as a white bull, the falling stars, the sheep and the seventy shepherds, the great horn, and at the end a new house in which all become white again. The text is R. H. Charles's translation from the Ge'ez (1912), word for word, without cuts; the hard astronomical passages are left as they stand and explained in our own sections.
